Nutrition Advice to suit your lifestyle

My philosophy_lime-in-water-with-black-background-picjumbo-com_low resI believe in a “no nonsense” approach to nutrition. A balanced wholefood diet that you can maintain for life will beat any fad diet hands down! The most important point is to eat real natural food with as little processing as possible. As Michael Pollan advocates “Don’t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food”.

Moderation is key – there are very few foods that you should avoid totally (e.g. trans fats, MSG and artificial sweeteners) and most foods are fine if eaten in moderation. Sweet treats are ok but not every day. Variety is also important and I encourage people to “eat a rainbow” of vegetables and fruit to ensure a broad intake of minerals, vitamins and phytonutrients.

Mindful eating is important. Firstly, it aids digestion and secondly, it helps us to feel full and our hunger is satisfied. When we eat slowly and chew our food properly, we can really savour our food and relish its flavour. When we eat on the run e.g. “dashboard dining”, we tend to choose unhealthy fast food or “grab n go” options. Also if we are stressed our digestive enzymes do not work well which can lead to indigestion and bloating. So think about how you eat!

In addition to seeing clients who wish to lose weight, boost energy or curb sugar cravings, I also work with people who have ongoing chronic medical conditions, particularly auto-immune conditions. Here I apply the principles of  Functional Medicine. This is a well-respected, evidence-based healthcare model that originated in the US. It is client-centred, focusing on each individual client and his/her unique history, rather than being disease-centred. Functional Medicine takes a systems-oriented approach, and engages both client and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership.

I am the coach who cares. I will listen to your personal needs and health goals so that I can support you as you move towards a healthier diet and lifestyle. Practicality is essential. I will consider your unique situation and circumstances to ensure that all suggested changes and meal plans are manageable. We will work together in a step-by-step process at your pace.
